Para Los Niños Charter School
Para Los Niños is a charter school in the greater downtown Los Angeles area that is committed to closing the achievement gap for children living in poverty (paralosninos.org). The PLN - Gratts Primary Center serves students embarking on the first steps of their educational journey from Kindergarten through First Grade. Their aim is to provide children and their families with the support and tools necessary to ensure academic success for their students. Their instructional program and integrated support services will allow their students to become self-motivated, competent, and life-long learners. In the spirit of our mission, we collaborated with the community to transform a blank wall into a colorful mural, while empowering these young thinkers as DESIGNERS - with a ton of community love!
The Project at Para Los Niños
Project Color Corps and the IIDA Southern California partnered together on the project. Project coordinators included Laura Guido-Clark from Project Color Corps and Heidi Hampton, Jolene Kraus, Jennifer Burgos and Susan Yun from IIDA Southern California. We were grateful for the generous support of Sherwin-Williams, Mata Construction and our muralist, Rudy. The collaborators worked to design, fund, manage and implement the project, with the help from the school and design communities. The students were asked their favorite colors and how they want to feel when they came to school through words and drawings:
The students chose the colors, shared their ideas, and became empowered in the process. Project Color Corps taught them about the fundamentals of color, its connection to emotion, and its ability to inspire. Finally, the school community voted and the HOPEFUL LOVE design won:
Volunteers Make it Happen
Countless volunteers and the school community rolled up their sleeves to complete the final transformation.
