THE BOYS & GIRLS CLUB

Long Beach, CA

Big Picture

After a rough year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Boys & Girls Club of Long Beach lifted the spirits of local youth with a vibrant new mural at the Freeman E. Fairfield/Westside Center in West Long Beach.

“The opportunity to partner with Project Color Corps will not only give our youth a chance to help improve the community that they live in, but they’ll take pride in knowing they had a hand in it all.”

—Joy Lodevico, Chief Of Staff
Boys & Girls Club Long Beach

A Conversation About Color

As part of the project, Project Color Corps’ founder Laura Guido-Clark, taught the kids about color—specifically how colors can influence their feelings and how they see the world around them.

The members shared about their favorite colors and how certain colors make them feel.

The Transformation

Katie Stratford and Lina Barr generously volunteered their time and design expertise to create the mural with two color options.

Both murals featured geometric shapes celebrating landmarks in Long Beach in vibrant, warm, and engaging colors, while reflecting the voices and words of the kids.COMFORTABLE FREE was the design which won the vote.

SPARKLY CONFIDENT

COMFORTABLE FREE

“I liked being included in all the planning and choosing the colors and then using the paintbrush on the building. I stayed inside the lines.”
