SERENDIPITY CENTER

PORTLAND CHAPTER — Portland, OR

Big Picture

The Serendipity Center in Portland, Oregon - a therapeutic school with a primary focus on emotional and behavioral growth - wanted to transform their outdoor play area for their students.

“The mural reveal at Family Open House was wonderful! We set up the craft table in the center of the courtyard, and kids were so eager to show their parents. Several kids said, "I voted for these colors!"

—Jolie Guillebeau,
Serendipity Center Art Therapist

A Conversation About Color

Project Color Corps worked closely with Serendipity Center’s art therapist, Jolie Guillebeau, to identify how the students wanted to feel when they came to school each day through words, drawings, and color. The students chose PEACEFUL STRONG for their design.

The Transformation

Serendipity Center wanted a design that would help students transition from outdoor play time to inside learning time. BRIC Architecture created a design with clear way-finding elements to help students move through this transitional space intentionally through pathways and color shapes. With help from Project Color Corps, BRIC chose a color palette that embodied Peaceful Strong through a mix of cool colors and bold accents.

“Our team was at Serendipity Center for the paint day. What fun, and so cool to see how it turned out. The paint colors were so lovely, and they made us happy even while working on a hot day.”

YGH + Integrus Architecture Volunteer
